UPCOMING REGION 9 EVENTS

JANUARY

Members of the Round Top Ruggers, Round Top, Texas, will be demonstrating rug hooking at a fiber arts show, "Making Every Stitch Count", which will be held January 30-31, 10am to 4pm, at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park. The show willl feature artisans demonstrating home arts from the 1800's. There will be a quilt show, and Round Top Rugger Judy Bruns's dulcimer group will perform. Artisans and displays will be located throughout the park, in the restaurant, the Education Center, the Star of the Republic Museum, and the visitor center. Admission: $9 adults, $6 students. FEBRUARY
FIRST ANNUAL HEART OF TEXAS HOOK-IN, sponsored by the Heart of Texas ATHA chapter in San Antonio, TX, will be Saturday, February 27, from 9:30 to 4:30. The event will be held at the Hill Country Christian Church, 20845 HWY 46W, Spring Branch, TX 78070. Cost of the event is $30, which includes lunch. A check, payable to HEART OF TEXAS, may be mailed to Jo Thompson, 27022 Autumn Glen, Boerne, TX 78006. Plan to come hook all day, or to participate in a proddy class, taught by P.D. Hankamer. You can make a purse ($40) or a stocking ($45) in P.D.'s class. Class reservations must be called ahead, since class size is limited, and are payable at the hook-in. MARCH
MARCH MADNESS STASH SALE, Friday, March 5, 9am to 3pm, will be held at the Fredericksburg Inn and Suites, 201 S. Washington (Hwy 87S), Fredericksburg, TX. Plan to shop or to bring your items to sell. Contact Judy Burgess at jacknjudyb@austin.rr.com, if you would like to rent a 4x8-foot table for $10. If you would like to spend the night at the hotel, mention "hookers" for a reduced room rate.
APRIL
THE STASH SISTERS FIFTH ANNUAL HANKAMER HOOK-IN, April 9-10, will be held at Whites Park, 225 Whites Memorial Park Dr., Hankamer, TX. Hours are Friday from 9-5, and Saturday from 9-3. The cost of the hook-in is $20 for one day or $40 for both days, which includes lunch. Reserve your place by February 15. Contact: P.D. Hankamer at heartspd1@yahoo.com. Mail check, payable to the Stash Sisters, to P.D. Hankamer, P.O. Box 166, Hankamer, TX 77560. Indicate which day you will be attending, or both. Include email address and phone number. Vendors include Katie Hartner, Tricia Travis, Bea Brock, Susan Quicksall, Deborah Nestledge, and Julie Burns. A rug will be raffled. Rug show open to the public Saturday, noon-2pm.
JUNE
ANNUAL EUREKA SPRINGS HOOK-IN, June 11-12, will be held at Eureka Springs Best Western Convention Center Hotel, Eureka Springs, AR. A workshop will be held on Friday, and the hook-in, with vendors, will be on Saturday. To receive the email about how to register for the hook-in, email Vicki Hardcastle at rughooking@hughes.net.

ANNUAL TEXAS RUGFEST HOOK-IN will be held Monday, June 21, at the Grapevine Convention Center in Grapevine, TX. Expect a full day of hooking, a boxed lunch if desired, vendors and a rug show. To receive a registration form, contact Susan Harper at texasrugfest@yahoo.com.

MIDSUMMER KIRBY HOOK-IN hosted by the Kirby Hooking Circle, Bethany Christian Church, 3223 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX, June 26, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Celestial Challenge: hook a rug or create a hooked project featuring a sun and/or moon, approximately 144 hooked square inches, any shape, and bring for Celestial Challenge Display. AUGUST
NINTH ANNUAL ANGELA PUMPHREY WEEKEND RUG HOOKING WORKSHOP will be hosted by the Heart of Texas ATHA Chapter, August 13-15, at the Holiday Inn Riverwalk, San Antonio, TX. Registration is $175, rooms are $99. Teachers include Elizabeth Black, Pris Buttler, Bev Conway, and Carrie Martin. OCTOBER
MISSISSIPPI WOOL DUST SOCIETY ATHA CHAPTER'S THIRD ANNUAL HOOK-IN, JAIL HOUSE ROCK, October 21-23, will be held at the historic Jail House in Canton, Mississippi. The cost for the entire event, from the Thursday evening cocktail reception at the historic Trolio Hotel on the Square (where they filmed "A Time to Kill"), to the two full days of hooking on Friday and Saturday, is $45. Both Friday and Saturday include light breakfast snacks and catered lunches. Space is limited to the first 50. NOVEMBER
KERRVILLE TRADITIONAL AND PRIMITIVE RUG CAMP 2010 will be held Nov. 12-14, at the legendary Y.O. Ranch Resort Hotel and Conference Center, Kerrville, TX. It includes 3 days of classes with teachers Karen Maddox, Judy Rippstein, and Pamela Van Lieu, all McGown certified teachers. Fine cut traditional and wide cut primitive instruction is available. Expect evening hooking, shopping for wool, kits and supplies provided by teachers, a rug raffle, a book sale, a silent auction, and a rug show and sale. TULSA RUG HOOKERS
The Tulsa Rug Hookers met through the holidays, enjoying a holiday party at the Hardesty Regional Library, where they meet regularly. Everyone brought food to share. Several members of this group have decided to participate in the SEEING RED MAT CHALLENGE, sponsored by Region 9 (see Feb/Mar 2010 issue of ATHA NEWSLETTER for information about SEEING RED). HEART OF TEXAS CHAPTER

AGGIELAND RUG ARTISTS
This College Station, TX group celebrated a birthday luncheon for member Emma Gene Schroeder, hosted by her daughter Teresa, at Christopher's World Grille on December 5. MAGNOLIA WOOL DUST SOCIETY
This Mississippi chapter, Jackson area, meets the second Saturday of every month at 11:00 a.m. They welcome any ATHA member. They will make face pins at their February 13 meeting. lisannemiller1@aol.com.

TEXAS RUG RUNNERS

RAFFLE TICKETS
Support the 2011 ATHA BIENNIAL by buying raffle tickets. Tickets for a handcrafted hooking stand and a 14-inch hexagonal frame of exotic woods from K's Creations will be available from Carrie Martin, 123 W. 19th Ave., Covington, LA 70433. The tickets are 6 tickets for $5. The drawing will be March 20, 2011, at the Woolwright's Spring Hook-IN. Don't forget that some rug hooking camps and groups are as close as your computer. Look at the Rug Hooking Daily main page (website is http://rughookingdaily.ning.com/ ) to find online hooking groups, classes and challenges, such as Ten-Minute Rug Hookers group and palette dyeing classes.
REGION 9 RUG HOOKER'S BLOG
April DeConick, a Houston rug hooker and member of Stash Sister chapter and Kirby Area Hooking Circle, writes a blog about rug hooking in which she promotes many Region 9 events and camps. Correction
Last month, I incorrectly identified Martha Reynolds as the president of the Lone Star chapter. Giving credit where credit is due, Janie Staples was president. Actually, I think both ladies deserve a lot of credit, for their contribution to the art of rug hooking in Texas. Thanks, ladies.
