NEWS FROM REGION 9 RUG HOOKING GROUPS

For more information on how to contact one of the many rug hooking groups in Region 9, email mlowry52@hotmail.com. The news below was recently sent in by members of some of those groups. Please send in your hooking group information. We love to hear what you're doing.

AGGIELAND RUG ARTISTS (College Station, TX) met May 20 in the home of member Martha Hix, and enjoyed hooking in her sun room, surrounded by the hundreds of beautiful orchids she grows as a hobby. In fact, being an AGGIELAND member has an added bonus. Martha furnishes the other members with one of her orchid arrangements whenever they host the group.
Members Jolene Doyle, Loyce Kahil, and Emma Gene Shroeder recently enjoyed a day of rug hooking at the Wildflower Rug Hooking Retreat (Round Top, TX) in May. There they enjoyed meeting other rug hookers, shopping, hooking, and especially hearing the story of Georgeanne Wertheim's MOURNING SAMPLER rug (see news item below). Contact: Emma Gene Shroeder, emmagene@suddenlink.net.

ROUND TOP RUGGERS recently enjoyed making wool "feather trees" at their regular monthly hooking get-together April 24, at the historic courthouse in Round Top, TX. This group meets the last Saturday of each month, and their next meeting is Saturday, May 29, 10:00-4:00 at the Round Top Courthouse. For more information, contact Karen Kubeczka, karen.kubeczka@mac.com.

MAGNOLIA WOOL DUST SOCIETY (MISSISSIPPI) recently held officer elections. New officers include: Lisanne Miller, president; Jane Dunaway, vice president; Carol Hettick, treasurer; Frances Dunaway, secretary; Sandra Holmes, librarian; and Cindy Mansel, historian. This group meets monthly at the historic Old Jail in Canton, MS. They will not meet in June; the next meeting is Saturday, July 10. All rug hookers are welcome. Contact: Lisanne Miller, lisannemiller1@aol.com.

KATY LAMBCHOPS (Katy, TX) meet every Wednesday (10:00-4:00) and the second Saturday of each month (10:00-2:00) at My Little House, inside Dovetail Antiques in Old Town Katy. They enjoy hooking, needlepunching, and make-it-and-take-it projects. This month, they will be making an appliqued strawberry needle case and a hooked strawberry pin cushion, at their hook-in on Wednesday, May 26. Let Jan know if you'd like to join in. Contact: Jan Peckenpaugh, mylilhouse@hotmail.com or 281-687-2088.

KIRBY HOOKING CIRCLE (Houston, TX). Beginning in May, the Kirby Hooking Circle will add another day of hooking. Every month that has five Saturdays, mark your calendar and come to the 5th Saturday Hook-In. The dates for 2010 are May 29, July 31, and October 30. They meet at Bethany Christian Church, 3223 Westheimer Rd, from 11:00-3:30, just as they do on each 3rd Saturday. Contact Lurie McAdow to be added to the regular email reminder list, luriemcadow@aol.com.

HOOK ME UP GROUP (Carrollton, TX) meets every 3rd Saturday from 10:00-3:00 at the Carrollton Church of the Nazarene, 1529 E. Hebron Pkwy, Carrollton, TX 75010. Their next meeting is June 19. Join them for a day of informal hooking. Sometimes this group gives classes. Janie Staples led a class in making a Cindy Goolsby accessory bag design in April, which was very popular. Bring your sack lunch and drink, and a $2 donation to the church for facility use. They meet in the large fellowship hall on the west side of the building. Contact Janet Kersh for more information and to be added to the regular email reminder list, woolgarden@hotmail.com.

STASH SISTERS (Houston, TX) recently raffled their rug, "Every Season Hath Joy" at their annual regional hook-in in April. The rug, which was a year-long hooking project of the group, was designed by group member T.J. Johnmartin (Nederland, TX). A large rug (32 x 51 inches), T.J. divided it into twelve blocks, measuring 8 x 11 inches each, depicting the 12 months of the year. The winning raffle ticket was drawn from hundreds of tickets on April 10, and belonged to beginner rug hooker Barbara Bosse (Clear Lake, TX). Member Sondra Ives wrote an article about hooking a raffle rug, which she submitted to ATHA NEWSLETTER, so look for photos in a future issue. The Stash Sisters would like to thank Region 9 rug hookers for their wonderful support of the rug raffle. Contact: P.D. Hankamer, heartspd1@yahoo.com.

NOTE: Before traveling to a hooking group meeting, check with the contact person to make sure there has not been a cancellation.

A RUG DESIGN FROM GRAVESTONE RUBBINGS

At the recent Wildflower Rug Hooking Retreat in May (Round Top, TX), attendee Georgeanne Wertheim had a surprise for her fellow rug hookers. The previous year at the same retreat, Georgeanne, a San Antonio artist and rug hooker, battled the heat and chiggers to prowl among the gravestones in the historic cemetery behind the church where the retreat is held. She and P.D. Hankamer, Houston area rug hooker and teacher, made gravestone rubbings and photographs of the old tombstones and markers.

At this year's retreat, Georgeanne unveiled her rug that she had designed from a sampling of the rubbings. Called "Mourning Sampler", the rug design consists of doves perched in a basket of vines and sunflowers. Hooked in golds, browns, rusts, and ivory textures, the rug was full of meaningful imagery, which Georgeanne had researched and explained. As a special treat, Georgeanne brought a roll of butcher paper and markers, and invited all the retreat participants to copy her original pattern for themselves.

Look for Georgeanne's rug photos and story about how to design a rug from gravestone rubbings in a future issue of ATHA NEWSLETTER.

And don't forget to submit your own rugs and stories to the NEWSLETTER, which is a 60-page full color collection of rugs, stories, timely how-to articles, and event reminders. To receive the NEWSLETTER six times a year, go to www.atharugs.com and click on "how to join". To submit an article to the NEWSLETTER, email editor Judy Long at athanews@peoplescom.net.
