Hello to all Region 9 Rug Hookers,
Please read, check for new events since the last Update, and circulate to your rug hooking friends. Thanks to everyone for sending in rug hooking information to share. Anyone is welcome to publicize any rug hooking event that they would like everyone to know about: just email me.
Please check with organizers before traveling to an event. Last-minute cancellations are sometimes unavoidable due to weather, closures of buildings where meetings are held, etc. I am unable to send out individual meeting cancellations, due to the large number of email contacts for this Update. My apologies for any inconvenience.
UPCOMING REGION 9 EVENTS
HEART OF TEXAS ATHA CHAPTER ANNUAL HOOK-IN, Saturday, February 26, 9:30-4:30, in the Kyle Amenity Building in Kyle, TX. Registration fee is $30, including lunch. Bring rugs for Show and Tell. HUB CITY RUG HOOKERS FIBER ARTS SHOW, entire month of February, at the Mahon Library in Lubbock, TX. Members of this active Lubbock-area rug hooking group are displaying rug hooking, braiding, locker hooking, punch needle, and French knotting. The library is open daily from 9:00-5:00. There are many beautiful pieces, which coordinate to make a very colorful show. The Hub City Rug Hookers invite everyone out to see the show. They also invite everyone to join them at one of their regular rug hooking gatherings on the second and fourth Tuesdays at Rachael's Quilt Shop, located on 50th Street in Lubbock. STASH SISTERS ATHA CHAPTER 6TH ANNUAL HANKAMER HOOK-IN, March 4-5, at Whites Park, 225 Whites Memorial Park Dr., Hankamer, TX. PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF LOCATION BACK TO ORIGINAL BUILDING AT WHITES PARK. Registration fee is $20 for one day, includes catered lunch; or $40 for both days, includes catered lunch each day. Vendors: Cal Creations, a Nimble Thimble, One Rug Two Rug, Country Gatherings, Designs by Deborah, and the Stash Sisters. Door prizes, silent auction, goody bags, rug show, and a basket of hooking goodies to be sold at live auction to benefit the 2011 ATHA Biennial. Kala Corcoran will demonstrate crocheting a rug out of your worms. If you would like to learn this technique, bring a size Q crochet hook, and worms in an 8-cut (or you can crochet with two #4-cut). BRAIDING A HOOKED RUG BORDER CLASS, with Phyllis DeFelice, March 4-5, at P is for Primitive, Canton, MS. Create a wonderful braided border around your hooked rug, or start a small circular braided mat. All braiding is done the "old fashioned way" by hand, folding the three tubes throughout to give an even braid. Class size is limited to 8. ATHA SEEING RED CHALLENGE EXHIBIT, March 11-19, at the Trolio Hotel, The Canton Convention and Visitors Bureau, 147 N. Union St., Canton, MS 39046. Come and see one of the most unique exhibits of rug hooking from across the United States. The Seeing Red Challenge Exhibit proudly opens in Canton, MS on March 11. The challenge was to create an original 9x12-inch hooked mat with the artist's own interpretation of the color red. Wait until you see what fiber artists from California, Texas, Illinois, New York, and Mississippi have created. Come see rug hookers at work March 12. YELLOW ROSE FIBER FESTIVAL, April 15-16, Seguin, TX. Deborah Neslage (Designs by Deborah, Brady, TX) will be a vendor at this two-day event, which will take place at the Seguin-Guadalupe County Coliseum in Seguin. SPRING FLING HOOK-IN, April 15-16, at the Trolio Hotel on the Square in Canton, MS. Every April, P is for Primitive hosts Spring Fling with fun, door prizes and great lunches. This year, they've outgrown the P and moved to the Trolio Hotel. Pay your taxes, then lose your blues with your fellow rug hookers! Join Lisanne for two days of fiber fun, fellowship and hooking. Lunch is provided each day, and on Friday it will be Christine's famous fried chicken. Bring a rug for the show and items to sell for the Flea Market table. Cost is $30 for two days, including lunch and snacks; $18 for only one day. LAS RANCHERITAS: THE RUG HOOK PROJECT will participate in the annual King William Fair, April 16, San Antonio, TX. Set in the historic King William District in San Antonio, the fair will be open from 10:00-6:00, and 50,000 visitors are expected. The rugs of Las Rancheritas will be on sale. THIRD ANNUAL WILDFLOWER RETREAT, May 11-13, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 412 White St., Round Top, TX. Three days of hooking, lots of wool, lunch included with registration, lots of visiting, opportunities to plan a new rug pattern with Katie Hartner or P.D. Hankamer, and Sylvia Hale will be teaching the beginner rug hookers' class. STAR OF TEXAS RUG CAMP IN TYLER, TX, May 22-26, at the Holiday Inn Select, 5701 S. Broadway, Tyler, TX. Teachers: Frank Bielec, Cindi Gay, P.D. Hankamer, Jayne Hester, Cynthia Norwood, Carrie Martin, Sharon Townsend. According to camp director Cynthia Norwood, there are a couple of openings in Frank Bielec's and Sharon Townsend's classes, so contact her if you are interested. WOOL STREET JOURNAL WORKSHOP AT COUNTRY GATHERINGS, June 16-18, San Antonio, TX. Bonnie Smith and Tina Ackermann will be at Country Gatherings to teach a Squash Soup Runner pattern. The runner is 19x32 inches, and is an original drawing by Bonnie Smith. Bring your own background wool, and green wools for the leaves and vines. Wool needed to purchase is 1 yard of "bolt" wool. KIRBY HOOKING CIRCLE SECOND ANNUAL HOOK-IN, June 25, Houston, TX. SAVE THE DATE! This popular hook-in will be back this summer with the theme, "Out of Africa--A Rug Hooking Safari," at Bethany Christian Church, 3223 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX 77098. The price for the workshop is $285.00, which includes lunch each day. A deposit of $150.00 is due at sign-up, and the balance of $135.00 is due by Nov. 1, 2011. ATHA SEEING RED CHALLENGE EXHIBIT SCHEDULE
The Seeing Red Exhibit at this time consists of about 65 mats, and will make appearances at regional hook-ins and events in Region 9 before going on to its final exhibit and auction at the 2011 ATHA Biennial in Lancaster County, PA, October 19-22, 2011. Currently, these are the dates where the exhibit can be viewed.
